Digital Shrines

Spencer Chang

#Class Reflection

very inspired by all the thinking and work around computing as a medium for people coming together. mutual aid, community-owned infrastructure, mesh networks, technology stewardship and maintenance.

thinking about how to bring these concepts into mainstream possibility or everyday people’s use of technology and how to demonstrate the gathering, maintenance, and empowering capabilities of technology.

project ideas

A Raspberry Pi single-board computer connected to a white USB cable is placed on a wooden surface, with an external hard drive in the background.

#computing shrines

A small roadside shrine featuring a Buddha statue, surrounded by flowers, candles, and flags, is nestled between two trees.

Shrines in the neighborhood stewarded by community members dedicated to everyday things that people care about for the neighborhood to come together in an asynchronous manner (like a shared dining table feels to housemates but to the entire neighborhood and open to visitors).

vision to be a subversion of how much technology has “taken over” space for itself and instead use this infrastructure as a way to uplift and dedicate to community members.

#vibes

A collage of multiple images arranged in a 3x3 grid, featuring various subjects including a vintage photo of people reading newspapers, a computer screen showing a virtual meeting, a hand pointing at a map, a concept drawing, an ancient gravestone, a logo with a sun and sailboat, a fantasy character on a grassy field, a stack of balanced stones, and a small roadside library.

#how it would work

small structures embedded into innocuous locations in neighborhood (telephone pole, stoop, park bench, side of a tree). Places where people are already passing through / gathering incidentally.

this class has been so dear to me even though i’ve been locationally chaotic throughout it (traveling, house hunting, etc.) and very excited to settle and have time to sit and revisit these ideas. would love to stay in conversation with everyone and their projects and dreams moving forward :)
